1. Understanding the Book of Deuteronomy
a. The Setting - the 40 year time of judgement is coming to an end and it is time to enter the land of promise - Deuteronomy is preparation for kingdom living in the land
b. The Land of Promise - "Canaan" is symbolic of life with God in heaven. It reached its zenith in the time of Solomon - Eden was the last place where God and man had life together
c. Life with God Deut. 4:1; 6:24,25; 10:12-14
d. Author is Moses
e. Method of delivery is a series of sermons
2. Life in Covenant with God
Covenant defined - a bond between God and Israel; a promise of God's blessings and relationship and a pledge to God of loyalty and obedience - illustrated by marriage - "I will be their God, they will be my people" - rooted in love - Chapter 7:6,7 ; law grows out of love - ie. In marriage a man is obedient to a "law" to be faithful to his wife because he loves her. His love fuels the law.
