A Letter From Our Pastor

Dear Members of Main Street Pres.,

You are all painfully aware of the recent decision of our Supreme Court on gay marriage. It is clear that cultural values in America have been shifting over recent years. This decision, in large part, reflects the moral values of the majority of American citizens. Christianity is becoming marginalized. What are we to think about all this? What are we to do? I have put together a list of resources that should help us answer these questions. If you have further questions please don't hesitate to ask me or one of our elders.

The following is a statement from the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA). This is the Presbyterian denomination to which we belong.

Here is a very helpful article by Russell Moore. Moore is the president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Church. This is one of the most balanced article I have read on how Christians should react to the gay marriage decision.

Dr. Ronnie Floyd, president of the Southern Baptist Convention has provided a strong statement on our loyalty to King Jesus over any human court. He reminds us that “Our first commitment is to God and His Word – nothing else and no one else,”

Some of you may have Christian friends who support gay marriage. These friends need to be challenged. Here is a helpful article by Kevin DeYoung with questions you should ask such people.

On a similar note, the following article by Dr. Peter Jones is a more scholarly response to Christian churches supporting gay marriage. Note: the references to Presbyterian ministers in this article is to ministers in the more liberal PCUSA and not our denomination PCA. It gets a little confusing at times but the distinctions are very important.

This final article is a response to the Supreme Court decision by Dr. Al Mohler of Southern Seminary. Mohler is always worth reading. His article is insightful, balanced and challenging. He exhorts Christians to speak truth in the darkness of American culture.
